Default Tire opinion on stock xj?

I need new tires pretty badly the tires installed currently are dry rotted and pretty bald. I just picked up my xj and I plan on lifting it a little within the next week or 2.

I found a set of 31x10.5
goodyear wrangler ht's. They have approximately 50% tread left. I can get them for 55 mounted and installed installed each. Does that sound like a reasonable deal? I was hoping to get 33's but I still think 31's look good. The tread is not all that aggressive but I think they will be fine for the light wheeling I plan on doing.

They will be going on stock suspension for the moment then I will get then I will get a 2-3 inch lift shortly. From what I have gathered they might rub at full flex or hard turns but I can live with that.

What do you guys think?

Look at those tires again. It really looks like some one took a grooving tool to them and cut the tread deeper.

I wouldn't pay that for them. thats $220 I bet you could find tires and wheels both on craigslist for that.

I put 30x9.50's on mine before lifting. Hit a dip and knocked one of my rear flares off and they rubbed the bottom of my front flares pretty bad if I had to turn very sharp. Got 2" lift now and it's all good.

Go to sears and get their super sport tire for around that price maybe a bit more. Don't screw around with junk tire s ,or someones seconds unless you really know them. Safty isn't only you, your not the only one on the road, and you can't control a blowout no matter how strong you think you are.

I'm running 31x10.5 Wrangler Authority's on my 01 XJ... They rub on the control arms at full lock, but it's not hard to avoid. I trimmed some plastic on the inner wheel wells, added 4" bumpstops to the rear, helper springs to prevent bottoming out, and I've never had a problem with rubbing since. Maybe $60 in mods top, including the springs.

I gotta agree with this. You can't see any wear bars in the tread....which would also make me think someone re-grooved them. I would stay away, especially for $50 a tire. I spent $30 on a whole set of used tires for my wife's van.....and they were goodyear's with over 40% tread left.

If I were you I would look on Craigslist first, you will be able to find something much better there for the same amount or just a little more money than what you are spending now. I found my BFG 30's brand new with a brand new mismatched spare for 400 bucks out the door.

I'd have to disagree based on the pic...they look to have maybe 8/32's (Total guess without an indicator, IE Penny or tread depth gauge) left on the edge of the tires, replacement comes at 6/32's, safe replacement that is. Look at that center rib, worn past the sipping. I've got a set of 31" BFG M/T's already mounted on Ecco Rims with around 40% tread left I'm selling for $325. I know, shameless opportunist!

Have you looked into Treadwrights? Cheap alternative anyways.
