maybe tomorrow
'88 to '90 have the same distributor gears.
After positioning the dist gear, mount the distributor and move the wires around starting from #1 at TDC, following the fireing order.

We decided to change the cam from the original motor, put the dist back to original and the timing set from the original motor into the new motor. It did something good cause its running smoother, but still has a backfire. Not near as bad, it is running on its own, not shutting itself off, not retarding and advancing like it was and its taking the throttle.
We forgot to block off the egr again so the efforts to set the timing tonite were useless cause its got the bad vac leak (egr broke and stuck open). By the time we realized it was after dark and all parts stores were closed. We'll be plugging the hole tomorrow and trying to reset timing.

Does anyone have an 88 that could look at the dist cap and tell me where the #1 plug position is since there are 2 different positions for the inline 6?
KILL THE EGR!!!

reading back over all this
and thinking the cam gears not matching is strange

I'm wondering if the new motor is a 90 or91 not a 89
that would make it a HO motor and explain why the old distributor is not fitting and gears are not meshing

guess that's a reasonable question too, Mike ... have misplaced my Haynes which is makin' me nutz ... but I think we could cross ref that motor number somehow if we knew it.

I have done a search but can't really find an index that is positive enough to indentify.

have not read every single post. so forgive me if this came up.

could it be a bad coil? a bad coil can make setting the timing nearly impossible.. and can cause engines to die and run erratically.

Hey where's my pics? LOLThat guy came over and looked. Battery is basically shot right now, but I questioned the color combo on the injector plugs. I was right, they were not in correct order. Will fix that tonite. He is pretty sure we have the timing off by 180 so once the injectors are in correct firing order, he is going to fix my timing and hopefully it will start purring. As long as there is no other problems...
