"thunk" sound coming from rear end, ticking/rattle coming from shifter area

so i have noticed a "thunk" sound coming from my rear end when i accelerate from a stop.
maybe a bunch of slop in a U-joint or something? i dunno.
i havent been under the truck yet to check my U-joints out.
also, i have noticed a rattle sound coming from underneath the shifter near the passanger side floor, dont know if this is common or not, seems to only happen when the truck is cold, after reaching normal operating temps, it goes away.
any help would be great.
thanks for looking.

I get all sorts of thunks, rattles, and shimmies. The newest one to show up is when I am starting it. "whirwhirwhirwhirTHUDvroooom" I wish I had a lift and some decent tools to go over it (or under it) with.

I had a "thunk" sound coming from the rear on mine a couple of years ago. happened when I took off from a stop and when I would hit a bump. Turned out to the be the passenger side rear shock. The rubber bushing was gone and the shock was wiggling around and causing a thunk sound. New shocks solved the problem.
Not sure about the rattle.

The rattle could be the 4X4 shifter. Push down on it when you hear the rattle noise and see if it stops.

I have the same rattle in tcase shifter area. Took the plastic cover off today and noticed a fisher price key danglin in there. I guess PO had kids! Removed it and seemed better...not for sure that was the sole cause as I did the investigation after stopping in driveway after work tonight. Will find out for sure tomorrow. Moral??? pull the cover and take a look for something obvious i guess.

The rattle in my Tcase shifter turned out to be the shifter linkage bushings. They were .99 from quadratec. Part #: 53004810 - http://www.quadratec.com/products/pr...4810&submit=Go
Removed driver seat and enough trim pieces to pull carpet back. There are 4 bolts on the transmission well. Remove these to drop linkage bracket. I replaced all 4 bushings...the "nuts" (look like washers) on the underside wanted to spin as I was turning the bolts on the floorboard...so you might need to have someone back out the bolts while you hold your nuts underneath the jeep...heh. Hope this helps.
