What does it do if you just try to start it? I would have to say it sounds like an injector leak, or a bad sensor. Does the check engine light or check gauges light come on?

details, details, details

Break it down to what is happening...

You have to "add" fuel... meaning that unless you do that, there is a lack of fuel to properly ignite in the combustion chamber. So, that being said, Check for a fuel leak in the lines from the tank to the injectors, check the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, check the injectors, the fuel filter, vacuum leaks, fuel pump, check for a gas smell... if it gets stronger in one place, investigate that area completely, Check timing, check ground and power wires from battery and alternator.

I just re-read this... so the Alternator is OUT of the vehicle? If you are trying to drive with just the battery, your symptoms are only going to get worse as the battery drains. As the battery drains its output in volts drops as well, your FI system needs a constant supply of power to function as it is electronically controlled. Yes, the alt CAN have an effect here.
