For those that think viscosity is the only thing that matters in oil selection.

This is the top end of the 4.0l in a 92 XJ. The owner's defense was that she was using the correct viscosity.... It is a bit hard to tell, but that oil is the consistency of pudding when it is not quite set-up.

One of the reasons I bid on our XJ at auction. Neglect (as in above pic), is pretty easy to check for. Good maintenance is easy to spot also.

Never heard of using different brands doing THAT to an engine. That is someone who changes it every 3 YEARS... Using different brands is better than 30K oil change increments.

Had a neighbor that was a chemical engineer (PhD) with Exxon/Mobil (now) for over 40 years. FWIW - his recommendation was "rotate between the 4-5 top/major oil brands when changing oil/filter - stay with the same viscosity but change/rotate brands - the next brand will clean/remove the previous brands detergents left behind when changing oil". Again, FWIW but from a very smart/educated man, may he RIP.

Guess the point got missed........it was that using different brands wouldn't cause problems and test results proved it and also kept engines clean. Most everybody can name 5 major brands of motor oil, probably twice that.
