Thinking of getting an XJ, but how reliable are they?
I picked up my 2000 with 30k miles on it. I drove it as my daily driver, commuting 64 miles a day for 7 years. It was extremely reliable.
I finally toasted the engine at 170k miles. The day the engine went out, it was running like the day I got it. I overheated the engine..if I could have pulled over, it probably would have gone another 150k miles.
In the time I had it I had to do the following things:
1. AC Parts repaired.
2. Clockspring replaced (horn and airbag quit working)
3. Passenger side power window only worked sporadically. (I didn't bother to fix)
4. Radiator, water pump, thermostat replaced.
5. Had a vacuum leak that needed repair
6. Basic maintenance..brakes and so on..
I'd say these things are build to run 300k miles or more if you give them some loving.

I agree with all these guys. If you want this to be a part time off roader its the vehicle for you! Every now and again something goes screwy but normally a cheap fix and not outragous considering they stopped being made over 10 yrs ago! Also a good car to learn machanics on, it's very solid and the engine is almost retard proof! Good luck on ur xj hunt!

One thing that is nice about XJs that I did not see mentioned above is the fact that Jeep made over a million of these rigs. I like to be able to walk into any auto parts store to get a certain part and 90 percent of the time they have one on the shelf. Thats really nice. I have 213k on one of my 4.0s and it runs like a watch but leaks oil pretty good. I DD it 47 miles to work one way everyday. I never worry about reliability.
Buying in an XJ is very cheap fun compared to a Wrangler. 2x the price usually for the TJ and wrangler guys know that xjs do wheel better!

I just put one on the road that shows 234k on it. Been totaled and rebuilt. The engine is supposed to have 30k on it. My sister has a 90 that has 377k on it. Been over heated seriously several times due to the closed cooling system. I put a newer open system on it and it is still going strong.
I have been a True Blue Ford lover all of my life and will always be but I like these tough little trucks a lot. The 4.0 inline six is one tough torquey engine that has plenty of power for the little trucks not to mention their tough 4x4 characteristics.

Let's see, 300k miles, no rust, frequently deep in Mexico runnin' hard and pulling a trailer of work supplies to the Mission plus it drives everyday to and from work.
Yep, they suck.
