Default thinking about buying a jeep

Well I just got rearended in my car, so I'm thinking about getting a jeep. There is a 1988 white jeep, 5 speed, 4x4, 4.0 i6. It is in pretty good shape. The bad: cracked windsheild, rear bumper cover is dented, interior isn't perfect, 214000miles. I haven't driven it yet, is there any thing I should be looking for?
My plans would be a 4.5 in rc lift with 31s or 30s tires.
They want 1350 for it, good deal or not. Its been forsale for awhile so I was going to low ball him

The only thing I'm worried about is the engine and transmission. I heard that some have weak trannys?

offer him 500.00, the 4wd is probably a vacuum line, 1.00 at auto parts store. A real easy fix.
