I bought my '99 recently and have been ironing out some of the bugs and such and have now begun to focus my attention on gas mileage. I know a tuneup will help but I realized the other day that my XJ does NOT have the vacuum disconnect front axle. I don't mind particularly except that all that junk is spinning while I'm buzzing down the road.. Is there a way to install locking hubs on these axles? I like that it doesn't have the disco since I had problems with that on my last Cherokee but now I see a good reason to have it..LOL!

With enough money, anything is possible.

Warn and Mile Marker make a kit that's way expensive and Reider Racing makes knuckles that use Chevy or CJ outers but it changes the bolt pattern. The front turning doesn't effect your mileage enough to warrant spending the money to add locking hubs. That's one of the reasons they did away with the CAD.

I just took it on it's first road trip yesterday (went bowfishing!) and it really wasn't too bad on gas. Actually about what I predicted. I'm gonna skip the hub idea because I'm NOT related to wealthy folks and just concentrate on the easier gains!
