I just ripped out my A/C and moved my Alt up. Not a bad job. Had to make one small spacer about 7/16 thick for the bottom bolt. Bought longer bolts for the mounts and made a brace with a slot so I can pry over the Alt and tighten the belt. My XJ is a '90 so your may be different.
But just for reference, I had these links saved.......................

Default Alternator mounting

I've not done it, but, I've been told that the wrangler 4.0 has the alternator on top. So find one in a junkyard and strip off the mounting

Yes can be done, I used an alternator and bracket from a grand cherokee wj (99-04) with 4.0L. Just cut one tab with the tension pully off the bracket and it bolts right to the block and the alternator, I believe 20 amps bigger, wires right up. At least on my 99 everything transferred right over.

That post calls for a 71 1/2" belt. Where can you get universal sizes? This sounds like a GREAT idea
