Default Testing temp switch for aux fan

Hey guys, how do you test the temperature switch mounted on the thermostat housing on a 91 XJ? The auxiliary fan comes on with the AC but I've never heard it come on during hot days in heavy traffic, etc.

Thanks!

It'd work if I just contact the leads on the multimeter to the leads on the sensor while it's plugged in and my Jeep is running? I thought it worked differently.
