Default Test Shifting Solenoids

My transmission hasn't been shifting properly lately, it jumps from 1st to 2nd rather early and then 2nd to 3rd it revs real high and won't shift. Typically I have to throw it into Neutral and then back into Drive and sometimes it will shift. My transmission specialist told be that there's a wiring messup somewhere (which it has thrown the CEL code for that, 12) and the NSS is shot (after being cleaned and cleaned it finally gave up the ghost). He told me it's probably a $600+ fix all around so he did not begin diagnosis until he was sure I was willing to pay that kind of money..and I decided not to. How would I go about checking the shifting solenoid? Anyone have any ideas what else to check. Kick down cable, ATF and TPS are all good. Thanks for the time.
Should I just junk it?

I used the method described by excess650 in this thread: (about halfway down the page) https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/tra...roblems-88637/
But I'm getting entirely different readings for my Solenoids (.4 ohms) and no reading at all for the ground wire. Does this mean my ground is bad?

Ok I just noticed that the one their testing is an AW4 and mine is NOT. I'm assuming that makes a lot of difference.

I'm assuming AW4 means, All wheel drive...where as mine is 2wd with the transfer case for 4wd. haha, I just know I'm being confusing.

If you have a '96 XJ, its an AW4 (Aisin Warner trans made in Japan).

The female connector (7 pin by the trans dipstick) goes to the trans. The row of (4) pins, (3) go to S1, S2, and S3. The male end goes to the TCU and the center pin in the row of 3 is ground from the TCU.

If you're shifting OK from 1-2 and not 2-3, its probably the S2 solenoid. S3 is for the torque conver lockup.

PM me your email address and I'll send you the AW4 diagnosis manual as an attachment.
