Default temp gauge acting up

My temp gauge is acting up. It goes from a little over 100 to over 210 then will drop again stay low then shoot up again. It just started a day or so ago.

Sounds like your temp sensor is going bad. Check the connections first and then replace.

So I've flushed the radiator changed the thermostat and still reading hot. The other day it went almost to 260. Shut it off for five minutes and was back down to 210 and wouldn't go past the dash right after 210. Anyone else have issues like this or might have an idea as to what else it could be?

I have a 93 and mine does something similar. Mine will read almost all the way to the third tick mark (just before redzone) but when you check the actual temperature it's only 214-215 degrees even though it looks like it's 230-240. I've heard two different things about it. One - these gauges over exaggerate the temperature to get the owners' attention if it gets a little warm. Two - aftermarket temperature sensors are not accurate and can be off by as many as 30 degrees. 260 to 210 in five minutes is a little fast. I think your best bet is to get a new sensor, preferably an oem one or at least a brand you trust, and see what happens. They aren't very pricey I don't think.
