Tcase shift engages sometimes

Tcase shift engages sometimes
Soo today I tried to put my jeep in 4 high and the lever easily pulled up like normal, but the light didn't turn on and it didn't engage... Then I put it in neutral and pulled into 4low with no problem...but again no engage and light... Then I tried again and it engaged in 4hi and low... Turned car off disengaged turned car on in neutral and the same thing.. Handle shifts easy, but no engagement... What is going on.. What should I check and look for

Had a similar problem with an old K5 of mine. Chain was slipping off the sprockets, that was an NP205 if I remember correctly......
