Default Tail lights come on randomly when XJ is off

My battery is drained this morning because my tail lights (the three red lights) came on sometime in the middle of the night and stayed on.

This happened once before. Should I look at cleaning/replacing the brake light switch? Any other thoughts.

98 Sport, with AW4.

I would start with the brake light switch too. You may want to try to clean it or just replace it.

Any tips on getting the old brake light switch out? I'm having a heck of a time.

Never mind, I was able to get it out. Just took growing a pair and not thinking about the cold.

So far, I'm hopeful this has fixed the problem. While I was wrestling with the old switch, the tail lights came on randomly again, they went off once I got the old switch out. They came back on when I plugged the new switch in, they went off again once I fully installed and adjusted the new switch.

Keeping my eye on it so I don't run the battery down again.

Yeah, If they keep coming on you may need to replace the switch. They only run $13 at Auto Zone.
