The facts are 0W30, 5W30, 10W30 and straight 30 r all the same vis when they reach 100C/212F operating temp. In a perfect world, oil temp would always remain at operating temp, even when the motor has been off overnight, thus providing optimum flow which equals optimum lubrication. In an imperfect world, when the motor has been off overnight and oil temp is below operating temp (notice I did not say "oil is cold"), oil flow is drastically reduced because the oil has thickened thus restricting flow.
Again, flow equals lubrication. 10W30 will not flow as quickly as 0W30 or 5W30 when the oil temp is below operating temp (100C/212F).

Do you guys think hydrogenated rapeseed counts as a synthetic oil? Conventional rapeseed was used to lubricate steam engines.

Have done tons of research and am deciding to go synthetic. It's a 2000 Cherokee with 127k , previous owner said he replaced the oil pan and valve cover gasket. Still has a small leak I'm guessing from the rear main. I have read all over forums that Mobil 1 10-30 full synthetic is the way to go. I don't think it will be a huge deal unless I discover even more leaks in which case I would switch back to dyno oil. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? If you are running synthetic, what brand and when did you switch, any leaks or problems from switching?

Alright, well it seems like I should just stick to dyno oil. I have read about using rottela in other forums and it's popping up alot here too. What would Mobil 1 dyno oil be is it their super? Or should I just do rottela 10w30?

If u r switching to synthetic, why not 0W30 or at least 5W30?
Has your research been mostly from reading opinions or reading facts?http://www.supramania.com/aehaas/

If u r considering conventional oil, 5W30 would be better than 10W30. No such animal as Mobil 1 dyno oil....all Mobil 1 is synthetic. Rotella T6 0W40 would be a better choice than 5W40.....if u can find it.

Thanks for the input guys it was really helpful. I did begin to read the link and understand how oil works a bit better. I'll try out the Mobil1 full synthetic stuff and see how it goes. I'm also using a mopar filter with it. Hope it goes well as I've heard a lot of great things about this oil.

I've ran Mobile 1 for many years in my race cars starting in the late 70's. If I were going to use it in my XJ (which I would "Never" do) it would be a 20-50 wt. Then I could go to the car wash and clean the engine and the next few days watch where the new oil leaks are coming from. My 4.0 has over 240k on it also.
I run Syn. oil in everything I own except for a diesel Motor Home a F-350 CC pickup and my XJ all get Rotella T, I buy it buy the gallon anyway.
