Default swaping 98 4.0 into 2000

i have a "spare 98 " that i thought id keep as insurance if my 00 331 head cracks. the 98 is lifted/modded and i dont drive it on road.
what would i need to do to make it work fully or should i sell the 98 and stash the cash for future engine work on the 2000?
the 98 is lower mileage and runs great, as the 2000 does,,,right now!
the 331 head keeps me thinking.

if you have another good donor, just drive yours until it goes. If it even goes. If you have a spare, why worry so much?

my question is what would need to be done to make the 98 4.0 bolt into the 00. i know there are many differences. im not looking for other opinions , just technical info to make the swap,or buy a 00 long block.

Wiring harness complete with ECU from 98 transplanted to the 2000 if the rest of the drivetrain is the same.

Best bet just replace with a new Clearwater head now and remove all worry then have the best of both worlds on then off road one for each.

thanks fred, i hoped i could make the 98 fit the existing 00 stuff. i also have lite piston slap in the 00 but it doesnt seem as serious a problem.
with a new head id still have the slap.
i can sell the 98 and use what i get /stash for future 00 fixes.
the 98 is lifted, cut out fenders, not pretty but might sell to the right guy. dont know what $ to ask?
im just exploreing possibilitiesfor future needs!,and i appreciate advice especially on the mechanical end of things. thanks again.

when i got the 00 i was not aware of the 331 head so its a main reason i am leary of driving far from home. it runs great otherwise and so far no sign of cracking.

Might want to pull the engine now and have it cleaned up and ready to go... new seals, plugs, etc. So when the one you're driving craps out it'll go faster and easier.... plus it's fun in your spare time, and not so much when you NEED to do it to get to work.

Plus... buy the reverse star drives now to take it off the Trans. .. E13 I believe. Get a ratcheting one and a solid one to put a pipe to if you need to. On Amazon they're cheap. In stores they usually don't have them or they cost more for crappy tools. I HIGHLY recommend the GearWrench ratcheting one... I beat the ever living crappy outta that thing and even bent still works great.

You could use the 98 as a whole. You would only have to make up a bracket for the coil rail and People have done the same plenty of times. And you would I think need to use an exhaust header for the 98 because the exhaust ports are smaller on 0331 heads.

Then of coarse if the 2000 has California emissions you would need the 2000 style header which will not work with the 0630.

If you put red loc-tite on the bellhousing bolts for example, I wish you the best of luck the next time you need to remove them

Only if the factory service manual specifies red-loc tight do I use anything other than blue. Blue mostly just prevents the bolts from backing out or vibrating loose.
