I'll try and include as much info as possible. I have 2 Cherokee's - one for parts (92 Limited) and daily driver (98 Sport). Both 4.0 automatics, and both with the same transmission type (AW4). I get that there are some subtle differences in AW4's over the years (including wiring harness)

For the longest time I've had a check engine some of you might recognize:

p0700 transmission control system (mil request) $D1
p0751 Shift Solenoid "a" Performance / Stuck off $18

From what I understand, this means that transmission overdrive solenoid need replacing (and please correct me on this if I'm wrong).

Since the ebay solenoid packages can get a little pricey, and I have this perfectly good parts jeep just sitting here.....Can I swap out the 98 solenoids for the 92's?

I'm planning a Transmission oil & filter change, so I'll be in there anyways.

I wouldn't put in a used solenoid.

P0751 is indeed a Solenoid A fault. Solenoid A is the 1-2 and 3-4 shift solenoid not the "overdrive" solenoid. The "overdrive" solenoid is solenoid C, the Torque Converter Clutch Lock-Up Solenoid.

Solenoid A is the center solenoid of the three solenoids.

There could be other problems besides a bad solenoid, see list. Note fluid level and condition and the Throttle Position Sensor could be bad.

P0751 POSSIBLE CAUISES:

TPS DTC P0122 PRESENT IN THE TCM
TPS DTC’S PRESENT IN THE PCM
TCM DTC’S P1744 AND/OR P1745 PRESENT
INTERMITTENT WIRING AND/OR CONNECTORS
TRANSMISSION OIL BURNT AND/OR CONTAINS EXCESSIVE DEBRIS
INTERNAL TRANSMISSION
TEST ACTION APPLICABILITY
1 NOTE: Always perform diagnostics with a fully charged battery to avoid
diagnosing false symptoms.

NOTE: Low fluid level can be the cause of many transmission problems. If
the fluid level is low locate and repair the leak then check and adjust the
fluid level per the service information.

Verify the brake switch input to the TCM is working correctly.
