Exclamation Super Noob with 01 XJ Sport wants to chage fluids... HELP! :)

I have 2001 Cherokee XJ Sport with A/T.

I do lots of boat towing, I want to use the right stuff.

Motor, I been using Mobile 5w30 synth.

I want to change, Auto Trans fluid, Transfer case fluid, front diff fluid and rear diff fluid. (I dont know if i do have LSD or not, being 2001, I am positive that I do have it, but guys! help!)

Noob questions, what is Dana 35 and 40? does this mean it has LSD inside? or open diff?

Please guide me into right direction. I have searched, got lot of scattered answers.

Summary
1) which and how much Automatic Transmission Fluid to use?

2) which and how much transfer case fluid to use?

3) which and how much front diff fluid to use?

4) which and how much rear diff fluid to use?

again, I do lots of towing (3500 lbs), and I want to put some good stuff to prevent from breaking down..

Thanks !

-John

i don't really have suggestions on what brand.... i'm sure others will, but your tranny will be around 6 quarts
ur t-case about 1-1 1/2, (just fill to over-flow level)
and ur diffs, one bottle or less should fill (again fill to overflow level)

Never heard of a Dana 40. Dana 44 but not a 40.
I'm not sure if you have a LSD. Get a build sheet if you can if not go to the dealer and have them run the VIN number that should tell you.

Synthetic fluids are a good choice in the diffs when towing. Also consider a auxiliary transmission fluid cooler and possibly an auxiliary oil cooler if the trailer is really heavy.

Xfer case will use ATF for fluid. simply fill until it comes out of the fill hole. Just like the front/rear differentials.

For fluid capacities an owners manual would be helpful along with a service manual from Chiltons/Haynes.

While this is the correct factory spec ... it's interesting to note that they changed the spec only just recently.

For years ... Dexron was the only acceptable fluid for the AW4 trans. Now all of the sudden ATF+ fluid is acceptable? Suspicious.

Some time later(after tranny failures under warranty started occuring) they quietly rescinded that with a series of TSBs.

Must've been quiet alright. I didn't know anything about them being rescinded.

I run mobil clean 5000 in a 10w40 in mine and will be switching to the Rotella synthetic next oil change.

If it has a sticker in the glovebox saying something about a LSD in the rear thats how you know if its equipped with it. You can also get on the Jeep website and submit your vin to get a build sheet.

Also you are going to have either a Dana 35 or a Chrysler 8.25, there is no Dana 40 there is however a Dana 44 but they quit using it in XJ's in 87 or 88 i think. The Dana 35 is Junk IMO but I have a 8.25 in the rear and it is stronger than the D35 by a lot.

For the fluids I'd consult your owners manual if you still have it. I would also suggest getting a trans cooler installed if it was not equipped with a hitch from the factory(part of the tow package).

It really was a footnote on a TSB relating to truck transmissions. It basically said that AW-4s older than '99 should still recieve Dex III while 00-01's that had ATF+4 in them from the factory should still get ATF+4

how many miles? might want to stay away from the thin syn oils.....if you havnt already devloped a leak....you should be fine. If your gonna tow you left out another important thing....Coolant flush!!! other than that IMO i wouldnt "flush" the trans i would only remove the 4qts from the trans pan refill and then do that ever oil change till you have changed out the full capacity W/TQ.

everyone that reads this thread needs to get a Haynes Manual! It tells you how much and what to install for fluids in your Jeep!
