yea that's not true of you want to separate the axle from the hub to replace it

that is correct

Tried that to no avail that was the first thing we tried haha

I think this will be the next thing, I didn't want to damage the bolt heads with the sledge, but at this point i'd rather just replace the damn things if it means getting it apart haha

Thanks for all the help guys, hoping with some heat and some pounding I can finally finish this thing and actually use it this winter

Good point. I always buy spare shafts with the hub and u-joint attached. That way I just swap in the whole new axle assembly and it is much quicker and easier to fix on the trail. I also find it is often cheaper to buy whole shaft assemblies like that from a junker than to get just the hub from a parts store.

put a 3/8 drive between the ear and axle and turn the wheel, it will get that hub off. I had to do it after getting stuck there in a u joint replacement. Look it up online. I typed cherokee axle joint and its the 1st wirte up link in google.

i just did the u-joints and 1 side wheel bearing on my new to me xj. i ended up having to air hammer with a chisel on 2 of the 3 points that the bolts go through, then once that was started, i used a hand chisel and a 3 lb sledge, and tried to go all the way around. tore the hell out of my brake gaurd, which i think may be contributing to my death wobble. that extension idea looks really good, wish i thaught of it.

This is 4 years old with anti-seize placed on it for future removal! I still had to beat the daylights out of it to get it off.

Beating a chisel with a tire huh?

OP, do you have access to a junk yard? Go grab two or three replacement bolts for the hub. Run the old ones back in till the thread is fully inside the hub but not bottomed out. Smack the bolt heads with a BFH equally while working it around.

Use these older bolts as your removal tool and store in tool box.

You don't want to buy new bolts. I think I paid about $15 for one bolt because I smashed the head. Make sure you don't ruin all three.

Wow, only took me 15 minutes to replace the hub and bearing on my 90. Took the brakes off, axle nut, 3 bolts in the back, and whacked it a couple times with an 8 pound b!tch beater. It didn't knock the thing completely off, but it sure loosened it up good! Where the axle comes through is just a tad to far on the tight side...

you're beating on the wrong part, especially for anyone trying to re-use their hub.

Use chisel and BFH as shown, work your way around the hub.

you guys are still doing it wrong.

i've taken apart tons of hub assemblies....always by pushing them out using the 3 bolts.
