89 cherokee if im in 4hi and try to go back to 2hi the parttime lite still stays on and its still in 4hi why dose it not want to go back in 2hi

 

Is it really staying in 4wd or is just the light staying on? Sometimes the TC will stay locked until the front axel has NO load or resistance. Best way is to shift from 4hi to 2hi while coasting on flat ground or when stopped, sometimes backing-up a few feet helps. You might try pulling handle back to N, coasting a few feet and the shifting straight to 2hi.

 

On my 87 xj i have to back up a few feet then move the lever to 2 HI.

 

Same here on my 94 and on my son in-laws 89, we have to back up a bit for it to kick out of 4 wheel...Tj
