Stuck in 4wd

Stuck in 4wd
I just bought a 1990 xj and it goes into 4h and 4L no problem but in order for me to get it to disengage after I have to go in reverse for a few feet. I don't know if this is a normal cherokee thing or not. My 95 does the same thing now that it is high mileage and the transfer case has been rebuilt in that one. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears!
