Default Strange problem while driving

I have a 99 XJ Sport. Tonight when I was driving on the highway, I suddenly experienced a condition where the RPMs dropped from about 2500 to zero with the check engine light coming on for a brief second before going back to normal. I had it happen once before a few weeks ago. Has anyone experienced this before? What areas should I start to trouble shoot? TIA

I had the problem happen years ago on my wife's '93 XJ Country.
The vehicle would just die while going down the road. I would coast to the shoulder and let it sit for a few minutes and it would fire back up and run fine.
Turned out the problem was the CPS ( Crank Positioning sensor) Vehicle was still under warranty( used vehicle warranty) and once the dealership replaced the CPS , never had another issue.

Sounds like a bad connection some where. Make sure your connectors at your ECU are clean and tight, perform a wiggle test with the engine idling. Check and clean your battery leads, the ground, and the end on the fuse block.

Had a similar problem and it was a bad connector at the ECU.
