it depends on if you want to burn up your valves straight piping without a cat will burn your valves up more quickly then not having it straight piped

It would be very loud. Can't say much more. May cause computer control issues, unless you provide O2 sensor locations. Oh, it would also be a Federal Crime, technically. But then we all know how the feds feel about enforcing crime. So, Go ahead.

Im not going for loud see this is my story. I bought the jeep engine blew.. jy engine installed.. still smoking.. cant figgure out if its oil in the cats from when last one blew *pistion rings went and blew oil EVERYWEHRE* or if its a bad seal in the new engine so i figgure cut the cats and muff off for now and run it a few days to see for smoke. thats really where the whole straight pipe idea is coming in from

Just un hook the exhaust at the manifold? where it bolts up... if it sends oil out you now know your problem. most people change the gaskets and everything when they put in a new engine before putting it in the car.

straight pipes will not burn your valves up. only shorty pipes will burn them up, i have ran straight pipes on tons of cars and most recently on my 89 325i for two or three years with no issues. this was a daily driver too.

only issue with straight pipes is the drone at certain rpms in the cabin. very annoying

You will lose low end torque and will probably start breaking up at the higher rpm range. the engineers disigned this engine to operate with a set amount of back pressure and when you change that it wont be for better. It like the guys who lift their Jeeps and complain about the handling, it was't desinged that way but the lifted Jeep are pretty cool.

Well the sad thing is that my jeep's engine is blown so there goes another week or so of waiting to get her back. This sucks

i ran straight pipes. loud! sounds like an old p-38 mustang fighter plane ( hence the bloody red barron name) but i noticed no difference in power or torque. but to stay legal i went with a high flow cat and a glass pack. sounds good to me!

Discussing removal of federally mandated emissions equipment is against forum policy... we delete it.

Now considering you were asking as a way to diagnose an engine issue and the fact your new here i will let this slide.. but i'm locking the thread.

BTW, you can unbolt the exhaust manifold and feel for oil in the heads exhaust ports as well.
