Yes it will definitely make it louder. But you will lose a slight amount of torque and have to plug your ears on the highway

What style did you go with. Best bang for your buck is a 40seires 2 chamber but also remember flows take a little bit to break in for some reason. Give it a couple weeks then see what ya think.

i ran a straight pipe for awhile. and it did the same thing loud on take off then quite going down the road. its just how they are and after a while you get used to it and dont even notice anymore. and i got nailed for not haveing a muffler. so had to put one back on but it did sound sweet.

No back pressure. And Im pretty sure you have to have a muffler in all states. Its part of inspections.

I had a buddy who had a flowmaster muffler put on, but had it with 2 outlets and made 2 tailpipes with resonating tips.. sounds great. Not sure how it would fare on an XJ but I dont see any back pressure issues.

I drove my Comanche 2.5L once with the pipe cut off right before the cat so I could go to the store for parts.

It was HORRIBLE. Could not hear myself think and I was lucky I did not get pulled over.

I say just leave the flow, If you want a louder sound. Seems like its time for a small block and some one ton axles lol.

If you want it louder drop a v8 in there. The inline six can only be so loud. even with straight pipe it will get quiet the faster you go. mine did. But now i have a APN header, 2 1/4 exhaust to high flow magnaflow cat, 2 1/2 from cat to flow master super 40, 3.0 inch turndown before the axle. easily three times louder than factory header, factory exhaust and factory cat. Mine rumbles. the pictures in my house vibrate when its idling in the driveway.

A straight pipe will make more noise, however you will loose some back pressure and some power to the drive-train!

you will gain power if you do some other mods with a straight pipe and i'm not 100 percent sure you really lose power or if it just moves up the rpm range.

the reason it gets quieter while you drive is on acceleration you have the throttle open more then when cruising down the highway. it doesn't matter what you run, the same thing will happen.
