Default Stock Transfer Skid

Hey guys. So I went to the junkyard and picked up a stock transfer case skid plate from an older XJ

My question is do you guys have any advice on mounting it? My XJ didn't come with one from the factory so I dont have the captured nuts to bolt it on. How would you guys reccomend that I install it?

The mounting holes should still be there even though your xj didnt come form the factory with the skid package.( I think) You will have to get some bolts from your local hardware store that will fit the factory hole.

You could always drill new holes.

I do have the holes, but there is nothing for the bolt to catch on. They're just holes

You can use some mechanics wire and fish them through. That is how I did mine, it worked fine.

There is a larger hole inthe unibody I think closer to the rear wheels. slide the wire in through one of the skid plate holes through the channel and out the larger hole. take your favorite bolt and throw a lock washer on it. Wrap the wire around the bolt and fish it through the channel by pulling on the wire. It might take you a try or two to get the knack of it, but its pretty simple.

not the same spot, but it should give you the idea



Once the bolt is through repeat with the second one.

This last part is a little ghetto:

since the bolts are now hanging down through the channel with nothing holdig them in place on the other side they are pretty loose, you wont be able to ratchet a nut on them. Put your skid over them, and hold some pressure on it so you can start the nuts on the bolt. Once you get enough thread sticking out past the nut grab it with a pair of vice locks and tighten the crap out of it with your favorite wrench.

Mine hung down too low so I just cut the excess off with a wheel.

I have never figured out how I am gonna get em off when that time comes. probably just cut them off

Thanks man. that sounds like a good way to do it. Will be trying as soon as it gets warmer or I find a buddy's garage
