So do I. I had my friend crawl under my jeep while i switched between 4hi and 2hi and he said that it was working as it should So hopefully i can rule out it being my transfercase. I want to crack my front diff open to give it a visual inspection but its too damn cold out and i dont have a garage.
If it isn't my transfercase or diff i'm thinking
He broke the ujoints on the old shaft and didn't bother telling me
He thought he could save gas
It was making noises or vibrations.
How much am i looking at if my differential is no good?

Have installed 4 PowerTrax No-Slip auto locking diffs in the rear of various vehicles, including the XJ. Hard to beat for both on/off road daily driving. If u have good tires, great on snow/ice. When the pavement's dry, there's the big ol' grin in the rear view mirror looking at those two black stripes. Easy 2-3 hour install, no buttons/switches.....it's automatic. Did u watch the video? A locking diff is the ultimate way to turn both axle halves. If u can't turn both axle halves, then whats the point? Mini-vans have open diffs. LOL
Any opinion on the Power Trax no slip vs the Eaton oem unit for street use? I think the Eaton is a few bucks cheaper but its an LSD. May be something to consider for the op.

A LSD is generally considered a waste of money, if you can't set up differentials it will cost you as much to get the preload and backlash set as the LSD unit cost, and they do not work worth a dam on trails.
The no-slip works as a locker and you don't have to screw with setting up the differential to install it. It does take a little practice to be comfortable driving with a locker in the rear, but it isn't something that can't be learned if you have a working brain.

I put a TrueTrac in my front diff last year. Huge difference. No more front end one tire spinning out going up steep rocky trails. I also plowed through knee high snow like it was nothing.

No problems at all lol. My buddy with the np242 had no problems either, he just left it in full time. Never had any problems finding parking thats for sure. Had more problems today since it wasnt really enough snow to warrant a 4wd shift. It was also a little bit of over eagerness on my part.

......and while saving a few bucks u listen to the clicking/ratcheting noise in turns where as the PowerTrax No-Slip is silent in a turn. It's an "up to the individual kinda thing" regarding the ratchet noise. I'm willing to pay a little more to have a unit with a little more sophistication and less noise.
So you would recommend installing a powertrax no slip auto locking diff in the back? Is it something i can do myself?
Or should i put one in the front?....

U need to go to the Richmond Gear site and read the installation instructions and asses your mechanical skills. I installed them by myself but it is easier/quicker with a friend. I prefer installing the lunchbox in the rear, that way u get the benefits of a traction enhanced diff 100% of the time u r driving......wet/dry, on/off road, 4X2 or 4X4, whatever.
Google Aussie, Spartan, Lock Right, etc. and learn more about lunchbox auto lockers. Also Google locking diffs......like I said, lunchbox lockers are just one type of a locking diff but the lunchbox unit are about the only ones that don't require a full ring/pinion set-up when installed.
