Got rear-ended this morning, small fender bender and nothing serious but my stock rear bumper on my 2001 XJ is toast. Bottom right half of the sheet metal bumper (to the right of the hitch receiver) is mashed in pretty good, way beyond bumping back into shape.

Good news is it looks like everything else if fine....bumper mounts, bumper guards, hatch frame, etc. So I just need to replace the stock metal bumper part.

I've never taken a rear bumper off one of these...is there any magic to it? Looks like the plastic bumper guards need to come off with it, correct? I've got a class III receiver under there so space is tight, but it looks doable. Any tips?

Also...anyone in the Atlanta, Georgia area who has a solid rear bumper for cheap drop me a line. Thanks!

 

It is pretty easy to take the rear bumper off. Take the end caps off, then you can reach in and take off the 2 outer bolts than mount it to the body. Then get under the jeep and you can reach a socket in there and get the other 2 bolts that are on the other side of the bracket. Its 4 bolts per side, and I believe it is a 15mm bolt If i remember correctly.
