Default stereo issue....

I am not sure where to place this question...OEM Cherokee Tech or Modified Cherokee Tech, since its a bit of both.

Well here it is...I receieved my 1993 Country from my mother after it was stolen. She knew how much i wanted it and after it was stolen from her and needed much work as a result of some dirtbag taking the parts he wanted and destroying the ignition, my mom hooked me up. i am finally getting to the radio...they pulled out the stock radio and cut the OEM harness. I want to install a decent cd player/radio, but i dont know anything about car stereos. Do i need to replace the OEM harness or can i wire in a after market? Considering I am so green at this, as much info as anyone can spare would be greatly appreciated.

After market is 100% fine.

Google search for stereo wiring diagram with your model year.
(Example: 1987 Jeep Cherokee stereo wiring)

A few sites have guides to what color wire goes where. I recently had to use one for my Liberty.

burtondjdj,

I would recommend a head unit with an Ipod interface. The reason is during off road CD players are prone to skipping.

I have not had any issues with my Ipod skipping when off road.

hopefully they left you enough room to get the oem harness out to crimp wires to it. I guess im lucky, when my integra was broke into, they just undid the harness connecter instead of cutting the wires. if you havent done a lot of wiring, as much as i hate to say it, you might want to go to best buy or something and have them install it since you will going into the factory harness. it is really easy to do though, you can solder or use butt connectors to wire the new harness in just following the diagram that turbo xj linked and the diagram from the stereo you purchase. just make sure to pay attention, the colors in the factory harness might not be the same colors from the head unit, i messed that up once and had my front left speaker playing out of my back right....... haha, it was my first install though, im allowed a mulligan on that one. you can check out crutchfield.com for some good info and sizing charts. if you buy from them, you can call them and get walked through step by step on how to wire everything up if you get stuck. i have never bought from them, but i have heard good things. good luck!

def agree with this! even good (reads expensive)cd players will start skipping doing 80 down a fire road haha, mp3 players work great since there is nothing to skip.

Or one with the usb port for a flash drive. Ipods are Ok if it's a solid state drive. If it's a hard drive based ipod, it will eventually get ruined.

+1, the little ring unfastened from my 16 gb thumb drive, the drive spent the night outside during thunderstorms let it dry out still kicking out the jams.

Same here. Forgot it outside, ran it over, bent the housing back, soldered on a new connector, and good to go.

i just pulled my stereo out to replace it with a new unit. looking at the harness as i removed it, i now remember that when i put the first aftermarket stereo in, i had to add a main ground. there wasnt one in the wiring harness like in most cars. not a big deal, but i remember flipping out about it when i did it because every instal i had ever done, there was a ground in the wiring harness that i was able to use. just a heads up.
