Default Steering wheel tilt seems broken

I was driving down the road, and the wheel fell down like I had it tilted all the way down. Now it freely shakes up and down. Any ideas on a fix?

Im assuming its pre 97. My 89 has the same problem but it also goes in a circular motion. Its 2 little peices in the back inside the steering column that need to be tightened. Its a huge PITA.

I decided just to replace my whole steering column since mine was busted anyways.

Search on Google. There are tons of writeups on it.

It could be the two bolts holding it in place. If you stick your head under there you'll see where it mounts to the bracket and one bolt on each side. I believe it was a 10mm socket just tighten them back up. Hopefully the bolts didn't fall off and are still in place. If not there then look around on the ground for them. Don't tighten them too, as you tighten them check the steering wheel till it feels solid. Hope this helps

It's an 87, and thank you.

I've got a '91 with a similar issue - very loose and sloppy. Thanks.

if it goes up/down but nothing else, odds are the tilt spring in the column is broken. Unlikely. If it moves in all directions, the 4 bolts in the column are loose. An hour fix.
