Default Steering Pump Bad?

My 87 4.0 died the other week and had to tow it but I had no power to anywhere to I had to steer without the help of the pump which I'm very sure is bad for it. Well I heard a pop and it leaked quite a bit of fluid from somewhere and sprayed the inside of my engine bay with fluid. I figured I built too much pressure up and it sprayed out of the reservoir cap.

Finally fixed the ignition problem, started it up and it sounded awesome except as soon as I turn the wheel either direction it'll start squealing and itll only stop if I fully turn either direction and hit the bump stops. I'm guessing its the pump but I don't know much about the pump/box so I'm hoping someone with more knowledge can help me out. Any suggestions are more than welcome! If I took the pump off a 95 4.0 will it fit on the renix? Havent read anywhere that they changed that when they switched to the H.O.

Thanks!

Actually steering without the vehicle on won't hurt anything, it's how you get air out of the PS system.

Did you bleed the PS system after doing the repairs? If not and it's been driven, it might have cooked the pump (speaking from experience on my KJ). Try bleeding it anyway and see what happens. Jack it up and without it running, make 20-30 turns lock to lock.

I guess it just needed to be bled. Once I started it it didn't screech this time after taking your suggestion. Thanks!
