Default steering column squeal

I got a 99 cherokee classic with 150k. when you turn the wheel from side to side there is a pretty loud squeal. not like a belt squeal but like in the cab from the column squeal. even just turning a 1/4 turn. slow or fast you hear it. Anybody got any info on this???

yeah, both our tj's do it too. it's like a groan. only does it when it's cold.
i think it is the rubber boot at the firewall. i've heard you can lube it up and the sound will go away.

Yeah mine does it too when it's below 25deg F. Same thing for me, I just turn up the radio until the cab warms up. I'll have to try the lube idea.

There is a rubber boot where the steering column exits through the firewall. Slide the boot back and spray some lube or grease it up really well and the sound will go away.

I have noticed that if you just spray some wd-40 or other spray lube the sound comes back pretty quickly, I used to bearing grease inside the boot this time and the noise hasn't reappeared yet.

this is funny, my cherokee does the same thing and I thought it was just mine....i wonder how many other little things mine does that is fairly common. Anyones back seat squeak or rattle where the latches are? (trying not to hijack just curious)

is this from the inside of the car or from the engine bay at the firewall?

There's a bearing or bushing in the column that squeaks.
