Model: Cherokee
Engine: 4.0L 99+intake jeepers creepers 62mm tb 703 injectors cold air
Default starts then stalls (automatic)

so i have a 1995 jeep xj with the 4.0l ho and i have a problem starting everyonce and a while it will turn over, start ... then a few seconds later stall. so i turn the key off and start it again and most times it fires right up but there is the odd time where it will take 2 or 3 tries.

and to ad to this i've tried to fix the problem, at the start of all this trouble i had a bad starter(bearing was shot) so i replaced that then i replaced the the fuel injectors with 703's because i could not because of the problem, then i realized the i should deal with the problem.....

replaced the fuel filter
replaced the fuel presure regulator
replaced the fuel pump

after replacing the fuel pump last night i thought the problem was gone for sure since i have a new fuel system now, but this moring it did the same thing

there have been no codes that have ever set my engine light off so i don't know where to go from here... HELP PLEASE

Are you sure this is related to fuel? If you think so you should try a fuel leak down test to see if your getting fuel pressure. You can rent the tool do it from Autozone.

A common problem is the CPS (Crank Shaft position Sensor). Now if this is an intermittent problem i would suspect that. Sometimes this sensor will just take a crap and you wont get spark. Or some times they will cause random stalling, rough idle, or just wont start period. The sensor is 90$ located by the bell housing on the tranmission and the plug is by the Intake Manifold.

Just a thought

I've been having this problem, not lately, but I did for a few times over a period of a week or two.

About 2-3 years earlier, my wife had the jeep at school, and the thing died while driving. It ended up being this sensor. Had it replaced, but I am thinking it's either poor connection or it is about to fail again. Bad part? I don't know, looking forward to further exploration and more advice on this issue.

I haven't had the rough starts/stalls for a few months now, but who knows.

No it will start,in the ignition circuit when you turn the key to engage the starter ,the relay gets bypassed. So if the relay is going bad it could shut off the fuel pump.

not sure if yours has it but mine had a ballast resistor on the drivers side front fender and jumped it out with a paese of wire and mine works fine. the balast is a light tan to white thing that has two wires that runs to it hope it helps

Yes mine has it ,what I am saying is in your fuel pump relay the contacts are the size of a match head ,or smaller. Over time these contact points get pitted and tarnished. Sometimes it may not make a good contact ,and your motor dies. Is it for sure this relay- I don't know ,but it takes about two seconds to swap it out.

I was wheelin once and my truck died. The connection for the cps was lose, the Wire for the cps is to short so I had to wiretie it around the connectors so make sure it's tight( the aftermarket cps wires were shorter than own)
