its obd2, the diagnostic system, the code scanner. buy the best you can afford. autozone has them at all prices.

this plugs in to the obd2 port and transmits so you can connect to a smart phone app. "Torque" app for android, "dashcommand" for apple, and there are others. If you don't have a smart phone I'm sure there are some inexpensive code readers. If there is no check engine light, there is probably no codes to read, but it is nice to have the ability to read the codes and look at other info.

First things first. After it dies is there spark to plugs. What is fuel pressure, pump priming is not good enough. Air flow restriction, just to cover the 3 basics of fire. Give us a lil more on after the fail.

Hook up fuel pressure gauge and see what its doing as it dies. Might be the internals of pump is getting just hot enough on the short run to fail its duty. You can hook up a noid light to injector and watch pulse if that cuts off as it dies also.

If there is no inline filter then where is the main fuel filter?

Fuel or spark....
Install a temp FP gauge to monitor fuel pressure during the event.
If FP remains constant, must be spark

The 97-01 XJ fuel pump has three filters. One inside the Fuel Pressure Regulator, one on the outside of the fuel pump module, and one inside the module at the pump inlet. See pics.

Thanks! That sure makes replacement a real PITA.... Expensive too

Though vehicles may have been a bit more simpler back in the day, they still need the same essentials to run. You need to get in there and figure out what's causing the stalling, just like you'd do on an older engine. Is it losing spark, fuel, or compression? I'd say we can rule out compression.

From the sounds of it, you're able to keep it alive for a bit while peddling the throttle while it's trying to stall. Sounds a bit to me like a fueling issue. But we can only speculate until you get in there and poke that noggin around under the hood. We can't do the testing for you. Fuel pressure is one of the easiest things to test for!

I'm simply reinforcing what Oswalla mentioned before.

Wow great info guys,Thanks. I was thinking it was a fuel thing but didn't want to face the music. It's a plow truck not registered so I'm working in the yard(cold as all heck up here). I think I can borrow a fuel pressure gauge and check that. Knowing the filter was in the tank was a bummer for sure. If it that I may have it towed in for replacement.

Well I did the starting fluid test. I started the jeep( soon to be known as the damm jeep) waited for it to stall, tried to start it it wanted to go but didn't. Sprayed starting fluid came closer to starting but didn't. I am going to pick up a scanner tomorrow. A local mechanic said he would put his money on a crank sensor before a fuel pump.

My understanding of our CPS (crank position sensor) is it cuts spark and injector pulse. You will not have spark or fuel if cps is dead, as in after it fails. If you want to rule cps out you will have to check spark and injector pulse with a noid light. Doing a ohms test on cps that is marginal would probably not reveal anything useful. Search here for a cps test with volt meter, can't find it now.

You can rent a fuel pressure tester at most auto parts stores. Some rent scanners too. Until you get a pressure reading before and after fail, you will just be guessing. You get under there and check for loose wiring going to pump ? Probably not much fun in the winter for sure.

You know, if it is not a show rig and you need to replace the fuel pump, there is an easy way. Cut an access panel from top. Stuff a shielding blanket over tank, and cut out access above pump. Get a scrap piece of metal and silicone and sheet metal screw it down to cover hole.

But a floor jack with a 12x12 piece of plywood under tank is all i ever needed to lower a tank and jack it back up. I get ya though, in cold snowy conditions, i don't envy you having to do that. Worked in a freezer at -5, 10 hours day for 15 years, i despise cold.

Please, just do the easy tests first. You don't need a scan tool.

1) Test fuel pressure - Key on pressure and cranking pressure
2) Test for GOOD spark
3) Test for injector pulse with noid light
