I figured sooner or later this evil sensor would end up being my problem too...it seems to be in every thread about someone having starting issues. My mechanic said he put in a new one when he did the engine swap...but I did not verify Mopar or anything. Originally Posted by lawsoncl

Interestingly enough the CEL is on sometimes but then goes away. Anyhow I can check that also. I feel like it could really be the cps. The only thing left to replace is the whole jeep!!! ha ha ha

Okay either I did the code check wrong or I am lost. One thing I will say is it is about 64 degrees out and I just got home from work and the jeep would not start///nonstop cranking. First time this happened with a cold engine.Originally Posted by Dave51
BTW do you get an engine code with that? Would that be an 11?
Anyway I did the code check and I thought I was getting a 35 35 4. which made no sense at all. But now I think I got 3 53 54...which are actual codes. It just did not seem like it was working correctly.
But 53 and 54 are right on the money with problems I had before
53
PCM Internal fault condition detected.
54
No camshaft signal detected during engine cranking.
That is far and away from the crankshaft position sensor.
Now I don't know what to think....My mechanic re-did the pcm twice. Could it be trashed again? I am at a loss right now

Brother he does not do well with this Jeep...it seems almost beyond him. He likes to work on big trucks, imports, but everything much newer. He has gotten it running many a time...but I know he might be lost again. Last time he let it sit for 2 weeks...not that it would make much of difference now since it is just sitting here. I was hoping I could work on it myself. I have all next week off minus a couple days. I can dig deep if necessary. My mechanic only did the jeep for me because we are good friends, I know he hates working on it haha...Originally Posted by Dave51

Go back and confirm exactly what the codes are. There are no 1 digit codes and the sequence has to end with 55 so neither of those may be right.Originally Posted by DCWinterXJ

Yeah I am aware of that man that is why I am lost. I have no idea what the heck codes I was getting. Nothing made sense. I did it twice and honestly if I am being honest with honesty it was 35 35 4.Originally Posted by Dave51

What the hell is that. I can't stand this thing. but I have a lot of free time coming up....so I gotta figure out something
Do you still have the Chrysler OBD I connector under the hood? Has anybody tried to read from that?
IMO you need to create a spreadsheet of everything you and "your mechanic" have done. Does he keep records? Get them. Record the manufacturer, part number and date of every change that has been done and going forward. Include notations of successful interventions.

Interestingly enough I do have that connector and I tried to use my reader...it says it does obd1 and 2, and I connected my adapter I bought on ebay haha...it powers up the unit but I just get comm error. Thats gonna be one heck of a spreadsheet.Originally Posted by Dave51

The one thing I do is try to only change one thing at a time...multiple changes at once can never isolate a problem. Like I said lots of free time coming up so it will certainly get interesting soon...if I could only stop crying when I turn the dam key....
Off to my last day of work for a whole week off! Minus a sidejob midweek. Thank you for all your advice I do appreciate it!Quote:
I would try to get a reader and cable specifically designed to read OBD I Chrysler. I use AutoXray EZLink. There's one for sale on eBay now. I think that's a competitive price but maybe you could lowball the daylights out of him.Originally Posted by DCWinterXJ

The problem is he's selling it "as-is", but since it reads OBD II it shouldn't need any upgrades to read your codes. I believe the latest software version for that is 3.03.

I have to supply power from the cigarette lighter to my Bosch reader to read the obd1 on my 1992 as well as connect to the port in the engine bay. Maybe you have a similar reader.

Well I would have thought that but the reader powered up connected to the adapter...and it does not have batteries...just like it gets its power from the obd2 ports.Originally Posted by gat

Hmm Rockauto does not sell the Mopar crankshaft position sensor. Quick question, is there a difference between the 94 and 96 sensor? And if so should I get the 96..since that is my engine. I will prob google all this now just askin
I am gonna order the sensor from ebay...did not know it was kind of expensive. Not really in the long run I guess. I feel it has to be done. And this is the only week I can really work on the Jeep...so whatever she needs she gets.

Does it matter when it specifies standard trans? That to me means manual transmission. I am not sure that is the right part. Am I overthinking this one>?Originally Posted by jordan96xj
Whatever year your PCM is, that is the year your sensors should be. Typically.
