Default starter question

I have an intermittent problem with the jeep not starting with the key (had a starter button in the console when I got it) I have wiggled the shifter and nothing the reverse lights come on like they are supposed to. When the key wont start it the gauges peg like my camaro did when the vats wire broke. Do these have a vats, chip in the key?
