Default Starter engine grinds before turning over

Hey guys,

So each time I start up my engine, the starter engine makes this electrical grinding noise before it turns over. The duration varies on how long it usually takes before the engine starts up. Sometimes its really long, sometimes really short. And then just today, a guy told me he saw sparks flying while it was grinding. Any idea what might be causing it? I'm assuming just a bad connection or something...

Try tapping on your starter while a buddy cranks her, it might be the starter going (To a better place..., the land of undiscovered country, with Jeeps galore)
