Will an oil change at a quick lube type place where they put cheap oil and a cheap filter make a 140K jeep have some engine noise? My jeep had no engine noise in it until I took it to a midas and then 1500miles later its like their cheap oil has thinned and im getting engine noise like lifter tap. I put lucas in it and the noise quieted for a while but now its come back like it thinned the lucas too. Is this possible?

 

possible...just change the oil and filter...on average for my Motorcraft filter i pay 3$ at Wal-Mart. and i use valvoline which costs 13$ so around 17$ i know you have to be paying more than that at a Quick-Lube...just do it yourself.

 

Should I put 20W-50 in it with maybe substitute and quart for lucas or something?

 

Absolutely Lucas will shear down. Its nothing more than basestock, a heap of viscosity modifiers and a little bit of shear stabilzer. Unfortunately, the crap oil you got from the quik-lube probably had a really lousy additive package. When it sheared down.. you got the noise. You added Lucas, the oil continued to shear, and now its too far to stop the noise again.


Drain the crud out... get good oil in there. Get the viscosity you want and forget the Lucas.
