Default Stalling issue/Fuel gauge off

Hi all,

So I filled up my tank yesterday and noticed that my fuel gauge goes from full to empty as I accelerate. Once I park the gauge returns to full.

After work I tried starting my xj but it would not stay running unless I gave it gas. The engine would stall once I let off the gas.

Eventually the jeep started and ran normally but the fuel gauge was still fluctuating.

Is something loose or does it sound like something is going bad?

Thanks

My Jeep is a 96 Cherokee sport 4.0L Auto.
