Default Squeaking Serp Belt

Like the title says, my serp belt squeaks pretty loudly for sometimes a few seconds to 30 seconds after starting the jeep cold, but then won't squeak after that until the next cold start. Would replacing it fix the problem, or is it something else?

My for f-250 did that . I replaced the belt a still squaled , ended up being a fully out just a hair of alignment . Might want to check those out and put new belt on too. Just 2cents, but just see what somebody else thinks to

Replace the belt that should fix it. Also check all your pullies when you replace the belt make sure it's now one of those either

Usually when the belt squeaks only after start up its a solid indication that the belt is worn or not tight enough.

First couple of minutes after you start the alternator draws heavy current recharging the battery. After a few minutes comes down.

What year is your jeep? My 88 uses the power steering pump as a tensioner. Terrible design but if it's just a hair too lose it will squeak. I've had the same problem. Try tightening the belt up some and if that doesn't work take the belt off and check all your pulleys for a squeak. If nothing else squeaks just go buy a new one. I had to replace my alternator from squeaking, then a week later I had to replace the belt. I feel like it's a never ending battle with my serp belt. Good luck man

I know that when I first installed a new serpentine on my 2000 XJ it squealed on start up until I tightened the tensioner pulley.

If a new belt and proper tension don't fix it, start checking pulleys. Crank it up, take some belt quiet spray and hit each pulley, one at a time, til the squeal goes away.

Then you'll know which one needs to be replaced. =)

Mine does this only when the ac is one when i start it. I suspect loose belt and or compressor about to go. Just havent had time to investigate.

My jeep is a 2001 XJ. I'll try to tighten it a bit and if that doesn't work I guess I'll be ordering a new belt. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Not sure, currently the jeep has 79k miles and I bought it used about a year ago. No idea of previous maintenance besides some oil changes and a tune up.

Ive got the slipping belt too. I looked and didnt see a way to tighten it on my 97 4.0 XJ. Is there a tension adjustment somewhere?

Thanks,

As long as your '97 is the same as my '96, the belt tension bolt is to the left and slightly below the power steering pump at like a 45 degree angle.
