1998 4.0L XJ, auto, 250k miles. Randomly starts sputtering and unable to accelerate while driving, persists for a few minutes then runs fine or when restarted. New TPS, catalytic converter, throttle body cleaned, new fuel injectors.

Check your fuel pressure. Maybe it could be the fuel pump?.
I just had this problem check the O2 sensors. There is a fuse that runs the heaters in the power distribution center under the hood change the fuse and see if that works. If that fuse is blown it would give you those problems.

x2. Had the same problem a few months ago. To go a bit further while you have your head under there, it might be the o2 but user: salad helped me figure out that although it was the o2 causing a crappy fuel trim, it was in reality the giant hole in my exhaust header that was causing the exhaust to leak out before the o2 could read it.
Yea I got a CEL now, got it read but forgot the code, it was related to the O2 sensor.
I just had a new car installed last week too so I'll go ahead and replace the sensor at the cat.
This problem only happens every other day or so, and stops after a few miles. I drove for about 40 minutes today, then it spontaneously started, drove for about 15 minutes barely being able to go 30 and the whole car jerking forward revving up and down at stop lights, and it went back to normal.
don't drive it for to long like that it will ruin your new cat. If this problem is only intermittent then check that fuse first before you throw an o2 sensor in it.
Last time I got the codes read it was just for the O2 sensor. Got it tested today and a whole bunch of codes popped up.
P0123, P0132, P0740, P0122, P0700
I did unplug my TPS for a bit so I'm assuming that caused a code. My Jeep was driven with no ATF which caused some issues so I filled it with ATF and lucas oil, which is probably a reason for the transmission codes. O2 codes are back
With the TPS unplugged that would have given you the P0123, P0122, P0740, P0700 codes. The P0740 code is the torque converter which gets a signal from the TPS through to TCM. As far as the P0132 code that would be the front O2 Sensor. That could cause the sputtering. I would still check that fuse if you have not yet. I would also check the grounding wires that are on the drivers side fender right next to the air box those are for the TPS take them apart an clean them.

Yes, I can certainly see why putting Lucas garbage in your transmission would throw a code. See me sig #3 for a good way to get that crap out of there before you destroy your transmission.
Oh, yeah, X3 on the O2 sensors. Check fuse first, then probably replace sensor. Get NTK/NGK only. NAPA has them for about a third of the dealer price.
Do NOT buy aftermarket O2 sensors for these vehicles.
My tranny actually started shifting better with lucas oil.
It spit out the rear drive shaft for the second time this month, driveshaft knocked the muffler out too. I'm calling it quits on this damn thing because its become a money pit. Gonna try to find another in better condition or sadly might have to trade it in on a newer car.
For being bad azz mountain climbers and scuba divers, our girls are still pretty temperamental. Certain parts, especially electrical, you're better off buying OE. NTK is the OE o2 sensor. For the money, get what's recommended. Certain things you don't want to cheap out on or you just end up replacing them again. Ask me how I know...

Did ou you ever find out what the problem was? My jeep is acting the same and I've changed spark plugs, to sway bare bearings, to fuel pump assembly...i have no idea!
