Default spuddering and running bad

hello, i am some what new but over the weekend i drove up in the mountains to one of my favorite look out spots it ran fine 3/4 the way up then started spuddering and wanting to die, it died twice an i would let it sit for 5 min then it would start up run ok for little then do it again, i finally made it to the spot when i got there, there was a hissing noise coming from the gas cap so i took it off and it started spitting a little fuel out for a few seconds then stopped. i let sit overnight and on the way down it ran completely fine. Why would it do this? We climbed in elevation about 2500 feet, i had a half a tank of gas, it never got hot, the only thing i could think of is i moved the vacume cylinder from behind the bumper to the engine compartment cause it kept getting ripped off. Please help and thank you

Theres a vent in the gas cap to keep the prasure even inside and outside the tank. when you got to higher elevation the preasure outside dropped and caused a vacume in the gas tank so your engine couldnt get any gas untill the prasure equalized. Just go to autozone and get a new gas cap
