Default Speedometer drive gear XJ98

Hello,
I have a 98 XJ, AW4, 342k.
I need to replace the speedometer gear, as well as the drive gear (in the tail housing of the trans). For this I need to remove the tail housing; Can this be done without dropping the transmission?
I have had trans codes for a while but a P0500 lately and the speedometer started acting up and stopped working at times. I removed the Vehicle speed sensor and the adaptor and saw that the gear is completely chewed up - that's easy to replace - but the drive gear, located on the output shaft if broken.
Thank you.
Marc

No need to drop the t-case or the tranny.

Thank you. And it is a 2WD. So I'll just need to remove the drive shaft, and then unbolt the extension housing, correct?

Yep.
Male sure you put the rear axle on jackstands so you can rotate the driveshaft, makes removing the straps a little easier.

Upon reasembly make sure you clock the gear correctly.
