Its very possable and actually happens quite often mostly due to wear on the gear itself being nylon they don't last forever ( i'm on my third ) also they vibrate loose (out of adjustment ) usually and I hate to say this but the drive gear in the case is usually at fault. So I would have him spin the drivin gear untill he feels contact tighten it up and see what happens. So no stupidty on you part . By the way to get off track here I noticed that we have the same jeep and at one time the same color if yours is blue , is it a limited ??

You can try the stealership. The gear should be the same all the way to around 2001 just compare the new one with the old one before you leave the parts counter. 231 t/c is a 231 t/c so they should be the same just have to get the right amount of teeth on both old and new gears.

Mine is a 90 and still cable driven. 96s were also cable driven too. That's as new as I have owned. Anybody know when the speedo gears changed in the 231j t/c?

Did you ask them if they could order one? I have ordered a few items through the dealer they didn't have em in stock but they ordered them for me from a warehouse. Sometimes they will still have items at the Chrysler warehouse.

OKC it might be too old for the stealership to even have it on computer. Did Al Gore make the internet already back in '84???
