I have 1996 Cherokee sport. I bought it recently and the speedo, did not work. Autozone says the error code is "output speed sensor error" and they are convinced that that is the problem. All other gauges work without any trouble. Check engine light is on. I tried to order this sensor from autozone, they don't offer it. I went to NAPA and the part was $26 bucks. It is a 3-wire sensor located on the driver side rear transmission facing laterally.

The sensor I replaced has a spinning shaft in it and was mounted in with a single bolt. The wiring harness did not match on the replacement sensor so I had to cut and crimp. The wires however did match up in color. I replaced it, unplugged the battery, and waited 10 minutes. Nothing changed, within 10 miles of driving the check engine light was back to it's perlious glow and the same code is present.

Is there another sensor that needs to be replaced? Is there some other way to diagnose this problem? Can anyone help? Also, if this is a sensor issue, could it cause shifting problems between 1st and second gear and a rough idle?

not sure if its the same as my 92, but the little gear that goes into the tcase was not contacting the output shaft, fixed it yesterday by spinning the whole doodad thats clamped on with the fork thingy lol, sorry dont know the names of the parts
