Default Speed sensor

How's it going fellas.... speedometer not working on my 96 Jeep xj with a np242tc, so I am thinking is the speed sensor. I've looked online and found a kit with pigtail and sensor. My question is, do I have to cut and splice the pigtail or can I just purchase the speed sensor by itself? Sorry if this is a dumb question, new to xj's and learning as I go.

Found pic online, so I have one on left and all speed sensors I’ve found have been the right.... so I guess i answered my own question. I’ll have to cut splice new pigtail correct?

Yes, you'll have to cut the existing connector off and splice on the new connector. Have you looked at the wiring to make sure it's not damaged first? You might want to pull the sensor out and make sure the speedo gear hasn't self destructed first. The speedo gear fits onto the end of that sensor.

Thank you for the reply, I’ll do that tomorrow and give an update.

If the plug or wiring isn't bad then you can just install the new sensor.

The replacement sensor has a slightly different connector than the oem, so he'll need to swap the connector on the harness to match.

I missed that part, you could find a used one pretty cheap, they don't go bad very often, its usually the gear that gets messed up.
