Usually if you get a hold of a dealer they can get you a build sheet if you provide the vin number.

But if you have pics of the axles I could tell ya... But the front can only be a Dana30. Your Tcase is more than likely the NP231 though.

Guess what - you've got a Chrysler 8.25 in the rear

And since yours is a 96, it has the 27spline axles and 3.55 gears.

Way better than a D35

The T-case is pretty simple to determine too. If you only have 2H, 4H, N, and 4L its a NP232...otherwise you have a NP242.

All the transfer cases used on the Cherokee were chain driven with aluminum housings. Command-Trac was standard on XJ models built with 4WD.

* 1984-1987 New Process NP207 "Command-Trac", part-time only, 2.61:1 ratio with low range
* 1984-1987 New Process NP228/NP229 "Selec-Trac", full-time/part-time
* 1987-2001 New Process NP231 "Command-Trac", part-time only, 2.72:1 ratio with low range
* 1987-2001 New Process NP242 "Selec-Trac", full-time/part-time, 2.72:1 ratio with low range

actually the 27 spline 8.25 isnt all that much stronger then the d35, the 29spline 8.25 is the preferred axle, this is found on the later XJ models 97+.

so you have a stronger axle then the d35 but not by much until you switch in some 29spline shafts.

The 8.25 should be gone next spring. Planning the "big" lift for next spring
