Or you could take ten minutes to pull one of the speakers out and actually look at the diaphragm to make sure it's not just a dead speaker.

Well, I hope it's that easy. But FYI, stupid Chrysler set up the stock system in my 2000 for 2 ohm speakers, and if yours are stock I wouldn't be surprised if they are also 2 ohm. The problem is that most of the aftermarket speakers available now are 4 ohm. 2 ohm direct replacement speaker options are limited. So you're going to need to confirm what impedance your system is before just replacing speakers with whatever's hot right now.

If you have a 2 ohm system, your basic choices are going to be:

1. Live with whatever 2 ohm speakers you can find. There are still a few out there, but not many.

2. Buy 4 ohm speakers and live with the impedance mismatch, which is not really that great an idea.

3. Along with replacing ALL the speakers, also replace your head unit and amplifier (if you have one) with a modern unit that can power 4 ohm speakers. The wiring won't care what you do as long as it's still intact, but everything else would have to go.

All I can really say is do your research. Somebody with a lot more stereo experience should now chime in and give you better advice.

I was taking a window regulator out of one at the junk yard and happened to notice that its speakers looked exactly like mine. Apparently after a while the stock speakers just rot.

Or maybe it's wires after all. Only one way to find out.
nearly every one I see in the yards with stock speakers are all turned to dust.
