Hi all. I just replaced my rear drum brakes on my 2000 xj. Snapped both rusted brake lines in the process but got it done. Only question is about the final adjustment. I set them so the wheel was hard to move but not impossible when the pedal was pressed while the engine was off. Does this sound right? They should adjust on their own after a few uses if they are too loose correct?

First time I've done brakes so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

When your brake pedal is depressed whether the engine is running or off the wheel should be not movable. On the back of the backing plate towards the bottom will be an opening that allows you to manually adjust your star adjuster. They should also automatically adjust when you go in reverse and apply hard braking pressure. These are my two cents

Ok cool. Wasn't aware I had to reverse for them to adjust. Will give this a try and check it out. Thanks for the help.

jack it up in a month and readjust.

Shoes are probably adjusted to close to the drum should just be the slightest amount of resistance. Your ride is only like 190 hp when it was brand new eons ago if the brakes are dragging it'll get dusted by Amish buggies. lol

I meant it was only hard to move when the brake pedal was depressed. Not hard to move freely. I err'd on the side of underadjustment bc I was thinking the adjuster would do the rest and I wouldnt risk overtightening right off the bat.

Don't worry about the "self adjuster", they don't.

Engine on or off, if someone can turn that wheel while the brake pedal is pressed, you need to adjust them tighter.

It should be absolutely immovable.
