sounds like a top end engine noise?!?! tapping tapping tapping.

Default sounds like a top end engine noise?!?! tapping tapping tapping.

I own a 1990 jeep cherokee with a 4.0. Its making a tapping noise at all times, and does increase when the rpms do.

My Water pump pulley was warped, So i put a new one on there thinking it was the culprit. I start it up, same noise.

It def. sounds like its coming from the top end, weather it be the rocker arms, push rods, or lifters, I dont know.

Another thing, When I shut the engine off, and when all the pulleys stop turning, It still makes the noise, slower obv. but its still there for a short period of time, either 30 seconds or 3 minutes or anywhere in between.


I have been in and out of this thing and not happy to say it. tomorrow after work I am taking the belt off and starting it up and I'm going to see if that changes anything.

Any ideas, or ways to find out what the noise is would be really helpful, I dont know how much I want to drive it, In fear of something breaking and doing more damage than I bargained for.

Two VERY quick thoughts....

Do you have ABS???

Also it could be a bad cap on your pressure bottle letting a bit of pressure out making a slight popping noise.

I had one that had a tiny hairline crack right at the top of the bottle and it would make a slight goldfish kiss noise when you shut it off till it cooled down....

Had a slight tapping noise develop in my 91 back last summer. It slowly turned into something similar to a drum roll in a barrel with a hammer. Thought my motor had gone south. Turned out to be my flexplate. Pulled the inspection cover off of the trans and saw tiny cracks. After pulling the trans out to replace the flexplate, I discovered complete seperation around the 6 bolts that hold the flexplate to the crank. Got a flexplate from the junkyard and now no more noise.

Default Question about your tap

Does yours make the same sound whether it's in park or driving down the road. My makes noise when giving her gas

Is it comeing just from the valve cover area? If it is it might just be your lifters clacking .Change your oil,see if that helps.Fresh oil is thicker.

The tappepty tap is coming from the firewall side of the engine --

Prob either a bad lifter or a loose rocker or worn falcrum. i JUST removed my lifters over the holiday...and let me tell you with 164K they were SHOT!!!!! heres what i would do. start it up let it run for a min or so..then take the valve cover off right away. and inspect everything......make sure all the rockers are full of oil...and are tight. you may want to take out the bolts holding the bridge and rockers and inspect the fulcrums...they should be nice and smoothe with no grooves worn in them. be sure to pay attention to the way they came off.....they need to go on the same......if all else checks out good replace the lifters......
