Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I too have a 98 XJ that has just now started to exhibit some cooling issues. Such as NOT cooling and guage showing 130-140 (sorry it's metric I know its too damn hot) suddenly. It'll creep up to 110 then blast to 140 and the buzzer sounds and the dash says to check guages. I haven't heard the electric fan come on so I thought it must be the sending unit. By the way the fan will come on when I turn on the AC.
But after extensive searching (and reading tons of stuff that had no bearing on my intial search query) I'm led to believe the 98 has only one and that it sends the signal to the ECM which tells my guages what to read and to also turn on the fan. Heres my problem. If the ECM can tell my guages what to read, why then is my fan not running? I have to assume the sending unit is working if I'm getting a temperature reading. What else could be in the circuit that turns it on (fan) when needed?

Hey I used to live in Windsor and you guys are NORTH of us. ROFLMAO
I can tell you stories about cars coming across the bridge in July with skiis on the roof!
I'm assuming the temp sensor is working as that is what the ECM uses to show the temp on the guage. Unless the ECM can also get the temp from another source that I don't know about.

All fun aside...I'd start by taking a multi-meter and seeing if you get any curious readings at the fan plug. See if there is power there, see if there is continuity back through the wire, that sort of thing. See if there is power at the plug when the buzzer goes off...see if you can make the fan work by jumping from the battery to the plug and supplying it power.
If none of that works, have a couple Blue's.

BTW, I like London better than Toronto. Nice town. My wife and I cruise up there now and then for a weekend - make a circuit of Niagara on the Lake and London then swing home via the Walpool Island ferrry.
I learned to play hockey in Point Edward when I was five years old...my grandmother was Canadian, my wife's grandparents are Canadian and now I have to have a passport to cross the bridge to have dinner and see friends I've known all my life. Can't even come back HOME without a passport. Ridiculous. Whatever these politicians are doing, they're doing the Wrong Thing.

No I'm pretty sure it's more than distance. Have a cousin over in Afghanastan right now and he tells me everytime he talks to the US troops there it's all metric. Temp, weight, distance, ammo, nuts bolts you name it.
Annnnyyyyywaaays have an update. Now it no longer spins when AC on. Did a bypass and no joy.
Think I now have a fubar'd fan. BTW fubar is also military. I'm from a military family and worked as a snivel errr umm civil servant fixing army vehicles. Would love to get a hold of an old duece and a half. In fact I first found my love for Jeeps working on the old M52's and 53's. I caught holy hell once for changing a clutch on one in 3.5 hours. All the other mechs did it in 2 days.

What drew you to the conclusion of the fan?
Dueces rock. My buddy pulled one from a scrapyard while deployed and got it back to snuff. Used it to make his parts run. That thing was indestructible! I mean rambo jumped one didn't he?
